A conversation with AI on its role in Supply Chain Management

We sat down for a conversation with ChatGPT to understand what the hype was about and test its knowledge on the all-important supply chain.


We wanted to understand its thoughts about AI's role in supply chain management and whether it's time for us humans to start developing new skills and looking for new job opportunities outside the supply chain.


Although it's not the exact AI that would replace your job, talking to it and knowing its potential is like talking to the guy trying to flirt with your girlfriend. I mean, I know she won't leave me, but I see why she might think about it.

In its own words, ChatGPT is a natural language processing (NLP) model developed by OpenAI. The following is a “text-style” conversation with the AI chatbot with specific questions on the roles of AI in supply chain management.

Final Thoughts


This concept is not new. IBM Watson is an artificial intelligence (AI) platform developed by IBM. It is still in operation and continues to be developed and improved by IBM. Watson also uses natural language processing and machine learning to provide advanced AI capabilities, such as the ability to understand and interpret unstructured data, generate insights, and make predictions. IBM has used Watson in various applications, including healthcare, finance, and customer service, and has also made the technology available to other organizations through cloud-based services. IBM continues to invest in Watson and develop new applications and capabilities for the platform.


About half of all companies, including us, currently utilize AI in some fashion. While there’s no agreed-upon research methodology or expected economic impacts, AI could take the jobs of as many as one billion people globally and make 375 million jobs obsolete over the next decade.


Newer, better-paying jobs likely won’t replace those lost, so without widespread retraining and reskilling, ordinary people will have significant difficulty finding new work.
